Big Island Running Company’s Couch to 5K

Big Island Running Company is again offering a free Couch to 5K Training Program starting Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. at the Alii Drive store. This 9-week program takes people who have no prior running experience or who are not currently running from the “couch” to finishing a 5K race. The program starts off with alternating intervals of running and walking and progresses to just running.

The program will finish when members complete the Jingle Bell Beach Run on Sunday, December 20 at Coconut Grove Marketplace. Throughout the program we will also have talks on topics important to new runners, including proper gear, common injuries, stretches and strength exercises to prevent those injuries and nutrition. 6th annual 5K Run for Literacy in Waikoloa

The 6th annual 5K Run/Walk for Literacy will be held Nov. 14 in Waikoloa. The race starts at 7:30 a.m.

Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region (FL-WR) is a non-profit community service association which supports literacy through library services and resources. FL-WR’s primary objectives are to bring a library to the Waikoloa Region, support the community, and malama the bookmobile which is located at the tennis –swimming pool complex, Waikoloa Village Community Association main office.

This SIXTH annual 5K Walk/Run for Literacy will start/finish near the playground end of Waikoloa Elementary/Middle School complex. Entry fee which includes a commemorative t-shirt is $20 for adults, $10 for 12 and under, keiki in strollers are free. Amenities include water stops, free healthy snacks for participants provided by Under the Bodhi Tree Restaurant and medals for overall and first place in age categories. Registration is 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. start time.

12th annual Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament

The UH Hilo Alumni and Friends Association will host the 12th annual Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament on Oct. 24.

The entry fee for the two-man scramble tourney is $175 per person. Registration will be at 7 a.m. and tee off at 8 a.m.

Includes green fees, cart, mulligans, various contests on the course, and an awards banquet with buffet lunch and prizes. Handicap: 30% of team’s September handicap applied to figure team net score.

11th annual I.K.L. Karate Championship

The Kona Branch of the International Karate League (IKL) will be hosting their 11th Annual I.K.L. Karate Championship. Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

IKL Branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu, and California, will be attending the event. In addition, other traditional karate schools throughout Hawaii Island have been invited to participate in the tournament.

The tournament will feature competition in Kata (Forms), Kumite (Sparring), and Kobudo (Weaponry), for children, teenagers, and adults.

The tournament is open to the public and admission is free. The Hawaii Police Athletic Federation is a proud sponsor of this event that promotes sportsmanship, respect and good will among its competitors.
